Brazil Nut concessionaires raise their voices with a statement to companies and entities in the carbon market

On September 30 and October 1, during the delivery of economic benefits of the REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions project to its partners, Juan Carlos Grifa, president of the Federation of Brazil nut Producers of Madre de Dios (FEPROCAMD), spoke on behalf of the entire Brazil nut community to demand that companies and organizations around the world take action and demonstrate a greater commitment to the protection of our forests.

“The REDD+ mechanism has been the only efficient and sustainable solution over time that has managed to channel resources towards the protection of our forests.”

To meet the goals we have set for ourselves as humanity and ensure that the global average temperature does not increase by more than 1.5°C, we must incorporate the forestry sector (AFOLU) in all mitigation scenarios. The threatened Amazon is on fire and forest fires are occurring globally. The loss of biodiversity and the thousands of local families affected are the clearest demonstration of this. Against this backdrop, the need to implement immediate actions to mitigate CO2 emissions becomes even more urgent… and the carbon market is a key tool for this.

The voluntary carbon market can mobilize and secure financing in the coming years to halt forest deforestation, along with the decarbonization of other sectors and, at the same time, contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), benefiting the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. However, despite the already known urgency to work hand in hand with the forestry sector and the protection of our Amazon forests, the necessary resources are not being directed to this sector.

Today we make an urgent call to the world. We know that everything takes time, but time is what we don’t have to face climate change that falls unfairly on us. – Juan Carlos Grifa, president of FEPROCAMD.

In recent years, the commitment and dedication of the Brazil nut families to forest conservation has continued to strengthen, and the figures prove it. REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions has been able to reduce deforestation in their forests by approximately 60% and +400 new partners have been incorporated in recent years, meaning +350,000 additional hectares protected. However, companies and buyers continue to get bogged down in technical desk discussions while climate pressures and threats of deforestation continue to increase.

“The REDD+ mechanism works and we are witnesses of it. That is why we put our hope and future in REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions. It is now when decisions must be made for the protection of the Amazon. We have no more time.”
