The construction of the Interoceanic Highway (Peru - Brazil) generated a major threat to one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, Madre de Dios, and to the brazil nut forest areas allotted to small local concessionaires in particular.
In 2009, BAM formed a partnership with more than 400 families in the "Federation of Brazil-Nut Producers of Madre de Dios" (FEPROCAMD) to protect +300,000 hectares of brazil nut forests threatened by growing deforestation. To date, the project has doubled the protected area (+600,000 ha) and benefits directly +700 local families (partners).
