2025 Bolivarian Games and REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions: Sport & Sustainability

1

The 2025 Bolivarian Games in Ayacucho–Lima will mark a milestone in sustainability for regional sports: the event will offset its carbon emissions through the REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions Project (VERRA VCS 868), an initiative implemented by Bosques Amazónicos (BAM) in Madre de Dios and internationally recognized as the world’s largest Brazil nut forest conservation project, with more than 600,000 hectares protected, together with more than 800 partner families.

With this alliance, the Bolivarian Games become one of the first multi-sport events in the region to adopt a sustainable approach to reducing and offsetting carbon emissions with Nature-Based Solutions and high-impact projects, aligned with global standards and the growing demand for transparent, measurable, and verified climate solutions.

A real commitment to the Amazon and sustainable sport

To ensure the reduction and offsetting of emissions generated by the organization and operation of the event, the 2025 Bolivarian Games in Ayacucho–Lima will finance carbon credits from the REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions Project.

This project, promoted by BAM together with more than 800 Brazil nut-growing families, protects a unique ecosystem where Brazil nut forests store large amounts of carbon and sustain local livelihoods, generating a direct climate and social impact.

“BAM is proud to support the 2025 Bolivarian Games in this commitment to sustainability and our world’s lungs: the Amazon. REDD+ Castañeros shows that conservation, technology, and sports can come together to make a real and measurable positive impact on the country and the planet,” said Jorge Cantuarias, BAM’s founder and Director.

Innovation and climate leadership through sport

The measurement of the event’s carbon footprint and emissions offsetting has been carried out following rigorous measurement criteria in line with international best practices. This initiative positions the 2025 Bolivarian Games as a regional benchmark in the integration of nature tech (BAM) and nature-based solutions within sport.

In addition, it directly contributes to:

  • Reducing emissions through the protection of Amazonian forests.
  • Generating lasting socio-environmental benefits for Brazil nut-producing communities.
  • Promoting a replicable sustainable model for future sporting events in the country.

REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions: world-class conservation from Peru

REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions project is the world’s largest conservation project in Brazil nut forests (in Peru): over 600,000 hectares protected, over 800 partner families, and over 1,000 species sheltered, constituting a pioneering model of integrity, traceability, and real climate impact from the heart of the Peruvian Amazon in Madre de Dios.

It has been designed under independent verification standards (Verified Carbon Standard: VCS – VERRA) and combines science, technology, and community governance to achieve transparent and high-integrity climate results, serving as an example of Peruvian leadership in conservation and an emblematic model of the new regenerative economy.
