Within the framework of the agreement signed with the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios (UNAMAD) and aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4: quality education, our REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions (REDD+ BN) conservation project has launched a University Scholarship Program for all concession partners and children and grandchildren of project partners.
In order to provide concessionaire families the opportunity to have access to quality education, this scholarship will allow students to cover their academic expenses, food, transportation, materials, among others, to enable full dedication to their studies and will give them the opportunity to pursue their preferred career at both UNAMAD and USAAC (Madre de Dios campus).
On Friday, June 9, the official launch of the Scholarship Program took place, where representatives of the REDD+ BN team and UNAMAD’s representatives met at the offices of the respective rectorate. During the meeting, the rector of UNAMAD committed to provide follow-up and support to the scholarship recipients through teachers and the university’s Welfare Office. He also gave details about the careers offered and the upcoming campus improvements. The project team also highlighted the benefits of the scholarships and the importance of the brazil nut farmers’ commitment to the REDD+ project.
As part of the scholarship launch, on Saturday, June 10, an informative workshop was held in one of UNAMAD’s amphitheaters, attended by more than 40 brazil nut partners and their interested families. At this meeting, the application and evaluation process of the program was explained to them, resolving all their doubts. Emphasis was also placed on the continuous accompaniment and support that the team provides to the chestnut growers so that they can adequately comply with the requirements established for their application, facilitating and promoting their participation.

Both meetings were attended by Juan Carlos Grifa, president of the Federation of Brazil Nut Producers of Madre de Dios (FEPROCAMD), who highlighted the joint work with the REDD+ Brazil Nut team for the design of the Scholarship Program and the permanent involvement and coordination with the Federation and its associations.
We support the education of the new generations of brazil nut families!
We hope that this first edition of the Brazil Nut Scholarship Program can continue to grow thanks to the commitment of all our partners to the REDD+ project and conservation efforts.
