Improving the productive technical capacities of the Nuevo Belén community in Ucayali

0

Through the REDD+ The Last Habitat project, we continue to promote the well-being of neighboring communities through initiatives that strengthen their productive capacities. A clear example of this is the work we have been doing in the Nuevo Belén community, located 21 km from Pucallpa, adjacent to the area conserved by REDD+ The Last Habitat. Since 2023, we have been implementing a productive project that promotes the cultivation of cassava for fariña as a sustainable economic alternative.

Strengthening local production

In Nuevo Belén, cassava production is a key activity for the family economy, as it is the main input for the production of fariña, a traditional food that is part of the daily diet of many families in Ucayali. Aware of this reality, BAM designed and implemented a technical and associative strengthening project that included the installation of cassava seedlings, technical support in crop management and the formalization of the Nuevo Belén Association of Cassava and Fariña Producers.

The project was developed over a year and a half and included activities such as production diagnosis, technical and associative training, and commercial management of the product.

High-impact results in the Nuevo Belén community

Thanks to the effort and commitment of the project team and the community, important results were achieved:

  • 25% increase in the productivity of cassava plantations.
  • 18 families directly benefited and 40 families indirectly benefited.
  • 1 hectare initially installed, which served as a model to replicate 9.5 additional hectares managed by the partners.
  • 20.5 tons of cassava produced per hectare.
  • 9.2 tons of fariña generated for the regional market.
  • S/. 27,600 collected for the Association of Cassava and Fariña Producers thanks to the sales achieved.
  • 536 workdays, including direct and indirect jobs.
  • 8 technical training sessions in the field.
  • 4 trainings to strengthen the internal management of the Association.

Optimism for the project: Next steps

We seek to continue expanding local alliances that promote the commercialization of the product and strengthen the internal management of the Association of Cassava Producers, also increasing the number of participants and families benefited. In order to consolidate a sustainable business and environmental vision of the Association, BAM continues to be a strategic ally for the communities in the area of influence of its projects.

More about REDD+ The Last Habitat: conservation and development

REDD+ The Last Habitat protects +14,000 hectares of megadiverse forests 45 minutes from the city of Pucallpa, through impact strategies that reduce deforestation and improve the quality of life of local communities. This project is part of BAM’s commitment to conservation and sustainable development in the Peruvian Amazon, which generates carbon credits with which different international companies offset their CO2 footprint.
