REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions project (REDD+ BN) continues to make steady progress in its commitment to the protection of forests and the well-being of its community.
Hundreds of Brazil nut families continue to receive economic benefits from the sale of carbon credits, in addition to the activities offered by the REDD+ BN project in favor of their members, their families and their forests.
On July 26 and 27, a new delivery of economic benefits to REDD+ BN partner families took place, where, once again, they received profits as a result of the conservation efforts achieved by the project.
The event began with an informative workshop on the new requirements for REDD+ projects around the world, in the context of the international voluntary market. During the session, the commitment and responsibility of all concession partners to the project and the protection of their forests was reinforced.
“I want to thank the REDD+ BN project… that is providing us with economic benefits and helping us to keep our concessions well managed. The REDD+ project is supporting us. As they are providing us, we also have to reciprocate with what they are asking for: to be up to date with our concession documents, not cutting timber, not burning the forest and maintaining the forest well. And that benefits us all.” – Miriam Palomino, REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions partner.
“We must all be committed to conservation and not cut down (timber) any more. It is very sad to cut down timber… that is not good at all… and it gives almost no profit, it is pure expense. Logging is really a shame, very sad. Conserving our forests gives us more income. I am grateful for this economic benefit because it has supported us a lot. I feel very grateful with everything.” – Sofía Rosa Paredes Dueñas, REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions partner.
“It is important to take care of the forests in order to take care of the animals and the air. It is important to take care of the forests to live more peacefully and to regulate the heat. The REDD+ BN project is a support for the economy and for the family. This project helps me take better care of my concession.” – Edith Herboso, REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions partner.
REDD+ BN currently involves more than 700 Brazil nut families with the purpose of protecting +500,000 hectares of Brazil nut forests and their extraordinary biodiversity. In addition to economic support, concessionaire families receive direct support and benefits from the activities implemented by the project to meet its objectives (CCB). These activities are implemented by a team of more than 40 people dedicated full-time to the development and management of REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions.
REDD+ BN activities: monitoring, control and surveillance of forests, technical and legal support for the proper management of concessions, ongoing training, support in the development of sustainable productive activities for the benefit of the community, biodiversity monitoring activities, among many others!
“It is very important to take care of the forests because there are many benefits and, more than anything else, we all work in harmony. We are united, we are a family in REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions.” – Alejandrina Espinosa, REDD+ BN partner.
Thanks to the conservation efforts and the positive results that the project continues to have, +300 concessionaires have joined REDD+ BN project in recent years. These figures reflect, once again, the commitment of the Brazil nut community to forest conservation and the Project, trusting in the management of REDD+ BN and putting their effort and hope in REDD+ for their future and that of new generations.
