Bosques Amazónicos participates in discussion on the carbon market and National REDD+ process with MINAM and VERRA

  • Peru continues to advance in the consolidation of the REDD+ scheme at the national level, a participatory process led by MINAM in coordination with VERRA and REDD+ project developers.
  • BAM continues to be involved in the process, taking part in these spaces for dialogue as a representative and leader of REDD+ projects in Peru.

Last Friday, October 27th, the “Contribution of the voluntary carbon market to Peru’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)” was held in order to share progress in relation to the National REDD+ process (definition of the national baseline and nesting process) and discuss the role and opportunities of REDD+ in Peru, within the framework of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The establishment and validity of Peru’s national scheme will support the credits generated in our country and provide entry to the global market for the use of international transfer mitigation results (with the corresponding adjustment) to comply with the Nationally Determined Contributions. This is expected to provide access to greater opportunities and openness, as well as better prices in the market.

During the meeting, Jorge Cantuarias, founder and CEO of BAM, and Juan Carlos Grifa, president of the Federation of Brazil Nut Producers of Madre de Dios (FEPROCAMD), partners of BAM, played an important role in exposing the company (BAM), its projects and the impacts achieved, as well as the experience in the carbon market, in order to feed the process we are carrying out jointly.

More about the event

The discussion included, among others, the participation of Berioska Quispe, Director of Climate Change Mitigation – MINAM, Angelo Sartori, representative of the VERRA standard and REDD+ project developers such as Jorge Cantuarias, founder and General Manager of Bosques Amazónicos (BAM).

Juan Carlos Grifa, president of FEPROCAMD on behalf of the REDD+ Brazil Nut Concessions conservation project in Madre de Dios, also participated in the event to share experiences and results of REDD+ initiatives in Peru financed through the voluntary carbon market.

Today, all REDD+ Castañeros concessionaires are aware of the scope of our REDD+ project. We have proven that it is much more profitable to conserve and protect the forest than to extract timber, and in practice, the numbers prove it and have proven it (…) All environmental actors without exception have a common goal: the defense of the forest. But without economic resources it is impossible to achieve; so it is crucial to continue generating and selling carbon credits to defend our forests. – mentions Juan Carlos Grifa, president of FEPROCAMD.

Jorge Cantuarias, BAM’s CEO

The participation of VERRA and MINAM is vital for the continuity of REDD+ projects in Peru (…) What is being done articulately (definition of the national process) with the different actors is to put the quality stamp of Peru to REDD+ conservation projects.” – mentions Jorge Cantuarias, BAM’s founder and CEO.

Peru has been a pioneer in terms of REDD+ project development. We highlight the role that the country has played in the market and the experience developing projects, which is so important to generate lessons learned and engagement with communities.” – says Angelo Sartori, representative of the VERRA standard.
